What is a "provisional cast on"?

A provisional cast on is one that lets you pick up stitches from the cast on edge and continue knitting. There are some excellent instructions for one way of doing this on the Page by Page of Maui website at http://www.pagebypage.com/provisional.htm#creating

I came across the term

"Turn" means exactly that. Turn your work around and work back in the opposite direction. Usually you'll find it in patterns where you're working back before finishing a row, creating what's known as "short rows."
